It's Better to Light a Candle than Curse the Darkness

It’s Better to Light a Candle than Curse the Darkness

What can I say? So many people are unhappy with their lives, but instead of taking appropriate, corrective action (lighting a candle), they would rather complain about their circumstances (curse the darkness). They may even say that they want things to change, but they never do anything about it. They just sit there and affirm all the things that are bad in their lives and keep getting more of those things. Complaints like “I don’t have enough” continually draw into their lives circumstances that perpetuate not having enough. What can people like this, or any of us for that matter, do to turn their lives around? To turn their lives around piece by piece, they must first decide exactly what they want in all areas of their lives, and form a clear mental picture of the desired circumstances. They must then put all their focus and attention on those goals. They must express gratitude for the things that they have and use what they have to move toward their goals. This is the only way to get moving, and once they do, they find better tools to get to their goals faster. But none of this happens without first taking action.

Light Your Candle

What if this is you? What if you haven’t taken any action at all, maybe for years, and now you finally decide that you want change? The very first thing you must do is to write down what you want. If what you want just stays in your head, then no one will be disappointed in you if you fail to make any progress. You don’t have to share your plans with anyone, but you must make your plans concrete, and the best way to do that is to write them down. Once you’ve written them down, then you have to decide what you can do to make this start to happen. Notice, I didn’t say “how” you can make it happen, I said “do.” Nature always requires something upfront. The seed must be planted before the crop grows. You don’t get a crop from nothing. You till and furrow the soil, you fence off the area and then you plant the seed. You have to inventory your skills and decide what you can do in the first place. Then decide, based on what you want, if you will need any new skills. If you do, you then get to choose if you want to acquire those skills yourself via classes or books, or if you want to employ someone who has those skills to work with you. Don’t miss this step, because it’s where most people stop. And if you aren’t sure whether you want to get someone else to help you, remember that all of the most successful people on this planet have a mastermind group with whom they work, and that each of those people brings a special skill or set of skills to the table. After that, make a plan to attain your desire. You may not know how you are going to get what you want at this point, but you have to put a plan in place and start working on it anyway. This is where the magic happens. You see, wishing for what you want doesn’t bring it about. But once you start to act, to move toward what you want, using what you have on hand, then new ways and new tools to getting what you want will come to you. Maybe you’ll see an ad for just the right piece of equipment, or you’ll talk to someone who has experience in getting what you want and can point you to other people or processes that are more efficient. Congratulations, you’re on your way. Your task now is to keep going. Dr. Shireen Lewis said, “Community is not a noun, it’s a verb.” I am telling you, in the same spirit, that goals are verbs. An idea is something that stays in your head. A goal is something that you do. And you’re kidding yourself if you think that you can take one step and that’s good enough. It’s like wanting to go from Norfolk, VA to Las Vegas, NV, so you pack up your car and drive to the airport. Then you just sit there in the airport parking lot thinking, “Yep, I’m going to Vegas.” No, you aren’t. Keep going. I hope you are inspired to light your own candles. Life has no replay button; we don’t get any do-overs. Every moment spent complaining is a moment lost forever. If you need any matches, just let me know; I have a whole bucketful.

Light your own candle; You’ll be glad you did!
